Zanting? You, sir, are a king of the written word.

'Japanese children catch dragonflies as a game' bollocks. Not since the invention of electricity they don't. They have Playstations like everyone else. Better Playstations than everyone else, I'll bet. They don't oaf around catching flies. Wikipedia is so full of carp.

We used to catch fireflies as children. If someone you liked caught one and gave it to you it meant you would marry. Or some such twaddle.

Snag: I'm afraid it's not my word. It's used (and as far as I can tell, coined) by Russell Hoban in his mind-blowing Riddley Walker.

ke: well, we don't have a Playstation, do we? Perhaps there are equivalents of us in Japan, merrily lassoing dragonflies, although personally tieing a hair to two pebbles would be too much hassle for me.

Bobble: fireflies, eh? That's very midwest isn't it? Charming in a Dorothy way.

Oo I love zanting.

A hair bolas? Do kids really have the attention span to build such a thing?

Bolas! That's what it's called. There's no accounting for the youth of Japan.

How small a 'small hummingbird'? Sounds like quite a teeny dragonfly to me young Yarb - yer big bully.

It was Brobdingnagian, pog.
It was? Then surely the bolas should be made of something more substantial than hair ... oh my.
